Howdy folks. My name is Rafe and I am a C6/C7 quadriplegic who was injured in April 2004 while traveling in India. I am fairly new to this web site and looking forward to connecting with other spinal cord people. I'm curious if you have any favorite web sites or discussion groups dealing with spinal cord injury ? I hope to hear from you soon.

Cheers,
Rafe

    Hey what's up,

It's good to meet you. My name is Colin and I am a C5 quadriplegic. I was injured in July of 2004.

A really good web site to check out is www.SCIwire.com

It is run by Dr. Wise Young of Rutgers University. There's a community forum where you can connect 2 tons of people with spinal cord injuries. Dr. Young will answer any questions as well as nurse moderators. I spent a lot of time on the web site when I was first injured.

So what's your story? If you don't mind my asking, how were you injured? What were you doing in India? My father was born and raised in India.

I look forward to talking with you more.

    Colin

      Dear Colin,

Thanks the web site. I have checked it out and is quite useful. So what's my story... Back in December 2003 I began an adventure traveling in Southeast Asia, primarily Thailand and Laos, with my girlfriend. If you send me your e-mail . I send you the whole story I wrote called Life As a Daring Adventure.

In a nutshell, after Thailand . my girlfriend headed back the United States, and I began a solo journey in India studying yoga and meditation. I was in Dharamsala, doing a 10-day silent meditation course in Buddhism. After the course ended, a group of us were hanging out having dinner on a patio rooftop at night. At some point, we are listening to music and people began dancing. I notice that there was No Guard Rail and decided it would be a good idea to Place a candle by the edge of the roof. As I walk towards the edge, the candlelight blinded me in the next thing I knew I was lying on my back staring up at the stars. I only fallen about 10 feet . but as you know, it doesn't take much for spinal cord injury to occur. I fractured C6 and C7.

I was sent to the Apollo hospital in New Delhi or I had spinal fusion surgery from C4 to T1. I was very blessed to have friends from the meditation course in my brother and father present with me during this very scary time. After two weeks . I flew back to the states and landed in Indianapolis, where was born and raised. I began 2 months of rehab at the rehabilitation hospital of Indianapolis. Unfortunately, I developed a bed sore from the first 24 hours of my fall . while in India. The best solution was to have a flap surgery so I spent the next two months and two surgeries getting my bed sore healed. Then I went back to RHI for another month of rehab before returning home to my brothers condo in Indianapolis. So I spent last winter in Indianapolis, primarily focusing on rehab.

Prior to traveling, I've been living in the San Francisco Bay area the last nine years and consider this my home. Most of my close friends and community live here. While I'm very appreciative of the support and love of my family, I couldn't wait to get back to the Bay Area. On March 10 I made the transition, and now living on my own with the assistance with several full-time caregivers.

I'm studying the majority of my time like you doing rehab of traditional physical and occupational therapy, as well as other alternative therapies, including scalpacupuncture, cranial sacral therapy, network chiropractic, Somatics.

While I was initially diagnosed as a complete injury, I'm beginning to feel deep muscle sensation in my lower back, pelvis and legs. I'm also very aware of my bladder and when I need to urinate. And just recently, I began to notice micro movements in my legs, which is very exciting!

I feel very confident that anything is possible, including walking again. I sense that you also share optimism about your recovery. It sounds like were both about the same place based on how long ago we were injured. If there's anything I can do to help support you, please let me know.

I highly recommend you check out:www.healingtherapies.info/
it is a great resource for alternative therapies for spinal cord recovery.

I also forward to continuing this conversation, and perhaps attracting other like-minded quadriplegics.

      Many blessings,
      Rafe

Wow, quite a story. I will send you my e-mail address so you can send me the story. An easy way to check me out is by going to my web site, www.ColinsOdyssey.com

I have done quite a bit of writing since my accident. I'll give you a brief summary of the past year of my life. The day of my accident on me and my friends were camping in the mountains of North Carolina. We were messing around at a very picturesque scene, a couple of waterfalls and a deep swimming hole. I used to love jumping off of cliffs and had recently began pushing the envelope more by doing more diving. Well you can guess what happens, I dove off of a rock and upon entering the water I broke my neck. I never even hit a rock, I simply entered the water wrong. I floated on the surface of the water for couple seconds and began to shake my head letting my friends know that I was not OK. As a began to sink people began to dive in after me. I sank 15 ft. down to the bottom of the swimming hole and began to scream out for God to save me. 20 some seconds later I began to feel the urge to give in to my lungs when my friend Jeff grabbed me and began to pull me upwards. Right before breaking the surface of the water, his grip slipped and I began to fall once again. Thankfully he grabbed me again and I broke the surface of the water just in time. It took an effort of about 40 people to get me out of there.

Eventually I ended up at Carolinas medical Center in Charlotte where a mesh cage was placed in my C4 vertebrae, connecting C3 to C5. I had a hairline fracture at the C-1 vertebrae which if was much larger, would have ended my life. I spent two days in intensive care and entered the rehab program. I spent six weeks as an inpatient and then spent another six weeks participating in the day program at the Shepherd Center in Atlanta.

Since the beginning I have had tremendous hope of recovery. I started getting trace movement up-and-down my body in the first couple months. Since then I continue to get stronger but so far I have had no recovery that has greatly improved my independence. Everyone kept telling me that my trace movement would turn into stronger muscles but so far it has not happened. Trace has turned into stronger trace and that's about it. I still maintain a lot of hope however in working out is pretty much my job. It would be great to reach a level of independence.

I feel like I could tell you so much more about myself but there are some burritos in the kitchen calling my name.

I have been to the web site you mentioned. It is a good one. I am especially interested in the surgery going on in Portugal. I'm seriously considering participating in the surgery in the near future. But I do not want to just in to any surgeries quite yet. Embryonic stem cells seem to be the hope for the future.

If you know any spinal cord injured invite them to the group.

        Talk to you soon,

        Colin
