Disability Humor

Humor has got me thru a lot of BS and crazy situations since I have been in a chair. After a few months I began to have fun with walkies with what I sometimes call gimp humor.

I know some people with disabilities disagree with making jokes about disabilities. Well you can't please everyone. Hell, lots of people don’t like other things I like, I don't worry about pleasing all those people. I can always find a few nuts like me.

I think walkies, AB’s, whatever you call them will be a lot more comfortable around us when they can laugh with us. Not at us, but with us. The main problem I see is there are not enough good gimp jokes out there.

I would like to hear your opinion on the idea of disability humor.

I will leave you with my favorite gimp joke.

What do you call a paraplegic prostitute?
A night crawler.

I didn’t say it was good. You got anything better?

Question for the quads

This website is a great idea! I guess an intro is warranted so, hi, my name is Lauren. Quick cliffnotes version on my medical story: back pain--tumor found near spinal cord--surgery to remove tumor--paralysis during surgery at the T5 level. This happened when I was 15, so I've been disabled for about 7 years. You should also know that I absolutely love cereal and have been terrified of sharks since my sister made we watch Jaws when I was six.

I have a question for the quadriplegics out there. Does it make you feel worse to be around a paraplegic? Are there any things that you really don't want to hear from us? The reason I ask is because I help quadriplegics sometimes at the hospital and sometimes I wonder if I say something wrong or make things worse since I have a lower level of injury. If there's any specific advice about what to say/not to say, then I would greatly appreciate hearing about it, so I will know for next time.

Ciao!

Lauren

I don't have a spinal injury, but a TBI. I can walk now, but I did have to learn how again. Had to learn how to get the message from my brain to my muscles again, after being in a coma for almost a month. I was in PT, OT, speech therapy for almost 2 years. I still have to compensate when I talk, and still need a lot of help. I have an assistant 3 days a week, and I don't work. I am on SSD and SSI, on NY TBI brain injury waiver. Anyway, there is a TBI tribe but nobody is using it.

I am coming up on my 3rd anniversary. I am having a hard time. The agency that coordinates my caregivers keeps changing my people on me with no notice, mostly to be cost effective. The last time I wrote them a letter and asked them not to, the person working with me didn't want to leave either. I am feeling very powerless. Actually I feel like I don't even have an identity anymore. I don't have a job, I don't have a voice, I don't even know who I am anymore.

Is it always like this around an anniversary? How do I get out of this funk? This isn't me. I can't stop crying, and I hate feeling like this.

Nice to find a sci tribe. Hoping to see it grow as sometimes we all may
have something similar to bitch about and recieve feedback from the understanding few. Im a para t-12 or so, and just 1 1/2 yrs post injury.
Diagnosed as complete, but having more incomplete attributes. Moved to Cal. only 2 months before crashing. I am north of San Francisco a couple of hours, sort of the middle of nowhere. Anyway, so nice to see you all.
Sincerely,
jason

Howdy folks. My name is Rafe and I am a C6/C7 quadriplegic who was injured in April 2004 while traveling in India. I am fairly new to this web site and looking forward to connecting with other spinal cord people. I'm curious if you have any favorite web sites or discussion groups dealing with spinal cord injury ? I hope to hear from you soon.

Cheers,
Rafe

My name is JennSpo and I had an anuerysm about four years ago. My whole life changed. I was in a coma for 3 weeks and when I woke up had to learn everything all over again. I lost some friends but I quit drinking and smoking cigarettes. i was very depressed for a long time cuz my right side is not working anymore. But now I'm just happy to be alive and every day my right side makes a little improvement. Life is good.
